NIXON.
17 May 2012Nixon is a quite the bigtime hero all wrapped up into a teeny-tiny perfect package. Holly and Mark welcomed this little man into their lives nearly three months ahead of schedule. Just last week he celebrated his 40-week milestone…one day before his mum and dad’s first wedding anniversary. Nixon has come a heck of a long way in his first few months, it’s already been such a journey for all three of them. After spending the first several weeks of his life in the NICU, at last he’s been allowed to settle into a routine at home and is now just thriving. I can’t even begin to explain the amount of love that Holly and Mark have for their first son, however, I hope these images will give you an idea of just how smitten they are with their little guy.
Holly and Mark, thank you so so so much for inviting me into your home for your first set of family portraits. This is, without a doubt, the very coolest part of my job. Stay in touch!

SHANN’S FAMILY.
23 Feb 2012From a young age, my parents instilled a deep-rooted love of the mountains in my upbringing. Despite being a hard-working honors student all the way through school, the only thing that really interested me immediately after graduation was a life very different than what I had grown up with. This meant moving out to the Rockies, getting a job as a liftie [seriously.] and living in staff accommodation right up on the ski hill. My family supported my aspirations to the fullest – so long as I enrolled in university for the following year. DEAL.
On my first day as a liftie, I met an Aussie gal named Shann. I was a very young 18 year-old, fresh off the rural Albertan farm with hair dyed the color of ketchup chips [why Julie, WHY!?] Shann was much older than me, like 22, and we ended up being roommates in that dirty little dorm room up on the mountain. It didn’t take long before we became pretty good friends and because of her seniority, I called her Mumma Shann – probably not the nickname she was expecting to receive during her one year working holiday overseas.
Despite the living conditions being less than sub-par and the job not quite as exciting as I’d envisioned, the years [yes...it took me a few extra years than I'd promised my parents to finally buckle down, quit the ski scene and head back to school] I spent in the snow biz are some of my fondest memories. I made some incredible friends, learned countless lessons…and always got a daily two hour ski break.
Like many friends from this part of my life, Shann & I have stayed in touch. We got together on my first trip to the southern hemisphere several years ago and was lucky she was keen to host me again on my most recent visit. She’s now married to a pretty cool guy named Leigh, they’re building a house in the town where she grew up and best of all, Mumma Shann is actually a Mum! Just over a year ago, Mr. Zach arrived. I think my 18-year old antics were good practice for Shann because she is a heck of a mum to this little guy.

These photos were taken at their beach. Shann and Leigh are both very involved with the local surf club, I’m quite confident little Zach will spend a bit of time at this beach during his childhood.

MEL+MATT’S FAMILY.
18 Feb 2012In the coming weeks you’re going to have the privilege to meet a whole bunch of people from my past, old friends who are all grown up and moving forward. It’s happening, all these great individuals from that time I’ve often referred to as the best days of my life are getting married and having kids. It’s pretty cool for me to see it all from the backside of my trusty camera.
Up first is Melissa and her fiance Matt. I first met Mel when I was 18 and had just moved out to Banff. She was seeing one of the guys in the room up the hall and would often come to visit. That was nearly ten years ago [WOW.] and now she’s building a brand new house and planning a wedding to a special guy named Matt here in Canmore this spring. Matt brought along his three kids and his parents the afternoon we did photos.

The twins just adore Mel.
